Product Description The 6th edition of this classic strategic management text provides up-to-date and concise coverage of all the essential strategic momentum. In this edition, the authors have comprehensively addressed issue assessment in the health care environment, service area competitor analysis, internal organizational analysis, development of directional strategies, strategy formulation, and strategy implementation. Through the many new examples and perspectives integrated throughout the text along with numerous âstrategic thinking mapsâ and analysis techniques, readers of this text will be able to develop comprehensive, well-documented, and innovative strategies for health care organizations. The focused format of this edition, combined with web support, make this an essential and accessible read. Highlights of the sixth edition: ⢠This edition is rich in new examples from real-world health care organizations ⢠In response to the waning interest among senior executives in the pursuit of short-term value, the authors have concentrated on the fundamentals of strategy analysis and the underlying sources of long-term success ⢠Chapters are brought to life by the Introductory Incidents, Learning Objectives, Perspectives, Lessons for Health Care Managers, Managers Bookshelf, and questions for class discussion ⢠The teaching materials and web supplements have been greatly enhanced in this edition, with power-point slides and other handy tools to give professors a unique resource
Book Description The fifth edition of the classic text in the field, Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations, introduces strategic thinking and planning strategies to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as practitioners in the field .

A Must for the Novice Planner July 27, 2000 Eric Edwards (Birmingham, AL) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.
exactly what I did expect May 15, 2000 Nathan Michel 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have the book for two days and I like to read in it as I loved to read Tom Clancy's first stories, diificult to put down, indeed the first management book that I prefered to my used lectures in the evening . the content is what I needed in the field of stratégic management. it explains the fundamentals and give examples out of real live. there are some practical details which I see as very usefull for direct applications. I do not regret this this acquisition, the autors seem to have great experience, I found a lot of practical sens and no useless theoretical stuff. better, you can find your way in minutes through such a "big" book ad I found a lot of US.management ideas of interest in Europe. I do recommend this and I am looking for more by the same autor.
Both conceptual and practical tools April 11, 2007 Thomas H. Pike 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an outstanding book. While naturally oriented to strategic management of health care it is also a comprehensive framework to strategic management in general. The book's layout is that of a university textbook but it is also written in an enjoyable style. I read this book as a practitioner and not a formal student and found it extremely readable and helpful. The authors present both conceptual and practical tools for strategic management.

I would highly recommend this book. It is easy to read, methodical in approach and provides a balance of relevant theory and application. A useful resource for any healthcare organization expanding its services within existin country or beyond.
Thanks extended to the authors...I look forward to other additions!!!
Excellent Book March 3, 2004 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.
